120/80... 140/90... What do these numbers actually mean?
Do blood pressure readings sometimes feel like a mysterious code?
When you have your blood pressure measured, your reading is written as two numbers, for example, 120/80.
Breaking down the numbers:
- The first (top) number is your systolic pressure – the highest pressure when your heart beats and pushes blood around your body.
- The second (bottom) number is your diastolic pressure – the lowest pressure when your heart relaxes between beats.
What's considered healthy?
- For adults under 80: Between 90/60 mmHg and 120/80 mmHg is ideal.
- For adults over 80: Below 150/90 mmHg is the target.
- A consistent reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher could mean you have high blood pressure.
Understanding your numbers empowers you to take action. If your reading is high, there's plenty you can do to bring it down, from lifestyle changes to medication if needed.
